A little joy in nature

Plot

The newly formed family pursues individual goals and challenges of modern life, relying on love, trust and resilience to guide them. Amid the many jobs, drone strikes that deliver death from above, checkpoints and payday loans that take months to implement, if at all, such precious opportunities are few and far between. In a simple, small house of cinder blocks and corrugated steel, the couple lives with Mummergade’s sister, Aravilho.

Seagal dreams of light

Aravilho dreams of making and selling her own clothes. As an unmarried woman, she can’t get a loan, so Aravillo devises a plan to circumvent the rules. The stakes are high.

“All my life I’ve tried to make things better,” Mamargade says, “But I keep making mistakes.” When misfortune overwhelms almost every aspect of daily life, “evil” But this humble, hard-working trio never stops trying and hoping for happiness, a business, time at the beach, money for school and better days. “It was the first film shot in Somalia,” said director Mo Haraway, who attended its North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. Haraway engaged the community of Paradise and employed non-professional actors to make the film.

The investment in Somalia paid off in terms of the film’s authenticity. The ambient sounds, radio music, traffic, waves and wind all contributed to the film’s realistic feel. “So the human characters are never alone.” Culture is also character, and I enjoyed immersing myself in Somali songs, stories and landscape.
