A girl who sees colors in people’s hearts joins a group with two others. Naoko Yamada’s fifth feature film. I loved this film. There was a certain warmth in it – the warmth that Totsuko brought through her honest appraisals, the warmth that comes from new friendships, the warmth of forgiveness and acceptance, the warmth of spending time with those you love away from the disruptions of life, and the warmth of creating art. I think of the prayer Totsuko recited: “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.” Life is hard, and perhaps it’s for the best that, like Totsuko’s free spirit who sees colors, we too can somehow find within ourselves the serenity, courage, and wisdom to get through it.
